What to visit in Reykjavik in terms of Architecture, history and urban tourism
1.- National Museum of Iceland
One of the things to do in Iceland if you want to know more about its history is to visit its National Museum. The best way to start your visit to Reykjavik. Here you will learn about the history of the Vikings thanks to a collection of pieces that began in 1863. Pieces of the first settlers of the island were recovered and you will be able to learn how they lived and what Iceland was like when they arrived.
2.- Hallgrímskirkja
At 74.5 meters, the highest church in Iceland is the must visit in Reykjavik. But, this church is not only known for its height. Have a look at its shapes. The architect, Gudjón Samúelsson, was inspired by the lava blankets of the Icelandic volcanoes to build the facade. If you decide to enter the church, you will find its interior fairly sober and unadorned. One of the great treasures you will find inside is a large pipe organ. It owes its name to the Icelandic poet Hallgrímur Pétursson, known for his hymns.
If you want to enjoy good panoramic views of the city, you can go up to the church tower. They will charge you to get in, but the views are worth it.
3.- Solfar, the sun traveler
If there is a traveling sculpture in the world, that is Solfar statue. Do not miss it when visiting Reykjavik. It is a Viking ship and represents the desire to discover new territories and the dream of going beyond. Isn´t that what pushes you to keep traveling around the world?
The artwork is by the artist Jón Gunnar Árnason. It is one of the most photographed places in Reykjavik and Iceland. You will find it in Saebraut, the center of Reykjavík, next to the sea.
4.- Laugavegur Street and Austurvöllur Square
Another essential thing to do in Reykjavik is to walk along the Laugavegur street. The main street of Reykjavik is full of bars, restaurants, and shops. The name of this street means ‘wash path’. Many, many years ago, some springs of water passed through the street. And women used to do the laundry here.
On the other hand, you can not miss the Austurvöllur square. This public square is one of the most popular places in the city. The locals gather here to have a drink or to lie on the grass on sunny days and good weather.
In the center of the square is the statue of Jón Sigurôsson, Iceland’s national hero. The most emblematic buildings of this square are the Icelandic Parliament and the Reykjavík Cathedral, which is the oldest church in the city, built in 1776.
5.- Perlan Viewpoint
Although it is located on the outskirts of the city, visiting this viewpoint is one of the essential things to do during your visit to Reykjavik. The Perlan is a building located on a hill that used to be a hot water tank. Due to its privileged location, it is the perfect place to enjoy the views of Reykjavík. On the fourth floor of the building, you will find a viewpoint to take photographs. In the rest of the Perlan, there are exhibition halls and even a revolving restaurant.
We recommend this viewpoint, especially if you have a good day and want to enjoy the sunset.

6.- Lake Tjörn
This small lake is located in one of the most beautiful areas of Reykjavik, its historic center. Near the lake, there are colorful houses, some buildings of the University of Reykjavik and also the National Gallery of Iceland.
If you visit it in winter, you will see that a large part of the lake is frozen. This is an important place for waterfowl in the area. That’s why the authorities unfreeze apart so that swans, ducks, and geese have their space to leave during the cold season.
Last but not least…
7.-Baejarins hot dogs Beztu
And as a final recommendation of things to do while visiting Reykjavik, you can not miss a visit to Baejarins Beztu. It is the most famous hot dog stand on the island. They even say that it serves the best hot dogs in the world. If you go to rush hour, you will find long lines. But we anticipate that it’s worth it. Oh! And do not forget to ask for the “Eina með öllu”, that is, ‘with everything’. It’s the typical one and it has delicious sauces and condiments!
